Gilbert brothers take FFA to heart

Peyton and Cody Gilbert Peyton and Cody Gilbert Peyton and Cody Gilbert are making their mark for the Whitehouse Future Farmers of America, and their dedication is paying off. They have both excelled in a number of leadership events in competitions across the state.

Between the two, they have won or placed in a combined 12 Leadership Development events. In Junior Creed Speaking, Cody place first at the Alba- Golden FFA Invitations, third in the Waskom FFA Invitational, first in the Mineola District contest and second in the Area VI contest, thereby qualifying for the state contest.

At the state FFA leadership contest, held at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Cody placed 13th. Over 700 FFA members in their first-year of agricultural classes competed in this contest at the district level, ending with the top 20 participating at state.

In the Senior Creed Speaking contest, Peyton placed first at the Alba- Golden contest, first at the Mineola district contest and sixth place at the Area VI contest. Peyton also competed in the Job Interview contest, placing third at Alba-Golden, second at Mineola district and second at the Area VI contest, qualifying him for the state FFA leadership contest as well.

At the state contest, Peyton also placed 13th. Over 700 Texas FFA upperclassmen competed in each of these two contests at the district level, with the top 20 in each contest advancing to the state contest.

Recently Peyton also competed in the Simbrah show at the Dixie National Livestock Show in Jackson, Miss., with a registered Simbrah bull that he raised from his own herd. His bull was named the Reserve Champion of his division in the open Simbrah show.

Even though fall and winter LDE contests have concluded for the year, both Peyton and Cody are looking forward to the upcoming Spring FFA contests and award competitions. Peyton was the Star Chapter Farmer for Area VI last spring, putting him as one of the top 10 second year FFA members in the state for his SAE program. Both Cody and Peyton are vying to be in the top 10 in Texas this year among their respective age divisions.

Peyton is a junior and Cody is a freshman at Whitehouse High School. Their parents are Hank and Karla Gilbert of Whitehouse.
