East Texas Genealogical Society to meet

The East Texas Genealogical Society will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, in the Taylor Auditorium of the Tyler Public Library, 201 South College. The meeting topic is “Quill and Scrawl – Ease the Pain of Early Handwriting.” Meetings are free and open to the public. Wildcat Extension Education Club to meet

The next monthly meeting of the Wildcat Extension Education Club will be from 10 a.m. – noon Tuesday, June 12, in the meeting room of Regions Bank, 1125 Highway 110 North, in Whitehouse. Club president Sherry Smith will present the program entitled, “Chocolate.”

AARP driving classes available

There will be an AARP Driver Safety Class at Pollard United Methodist Church, 3030 New Copeland Road, in Tyler from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday June 13. Contact Harry H Rayner at hhraynersr@gmail.com or call 903-768-2032.

There will also be an AARP Driver Safety Class at Atria Senior Living, 5317 New Copeland Road, in Tyler from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Thursday June 14. We are also looking for Volunteer Instructors. Contact Klaire White at 903-509-9575 for information or to register.

The cost for either class is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Classes are open to all drivers with a valid driver’s license but are geared to participants over 50.  After completion of the class, you may be eligible for a discount on your automobile insurance premium.

Recycle-Recycle-Recycle

Republic Services in Whitehouse picks up recycling on Wednesday. Recyclable items include paper, newspaper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum cans and tin cans. Troup has a self-service recycling receptacle. The Allied Waste Recycling bin is located at the corner of W. Bradford and N. Georgia.

Jam session and sing along

Jam session and sing along runs from 1:30 to 4 p.m. each Friday. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate. Acoustic instruments only. Music includes Country, Bluegrass and Gospel. TASCA members are free. Guests are $1 each. TASCA is located at 10495 CR 2167 (Jim Russell Rd), in Whitehouse. 

American Legion weekly events

American Legion in Troup at 301 Magnolia has pool tournaments beginning at 7 p.m. each Wednesday night.

The Tyler Area Senor Citizens Association is open to the public, 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. TASCA’s schedule includes the following events: 

Thursday, June 7: Pinochle, 9 a.m.; 42 group (straight), 12:00 p.m.; Mah jongg, Hand and foot, 12:00 p.m.

Friday, June 8: Coffee social group; 9:30 a.m., Fitness exercise with Certified Instructor for Older Adults, 9:30 a.m.; Practice bridge, 12 p.m.; Sing along/jamming, 1:30 p.m.

Monday, June 11: Social coffee group, 9:30 a.m.; 42 Group, 12 p.m.; Mah Jongg, 1 p.m.

 Tuesday, June 12: “84” group, 8:45 a.m.; Ballroom dance lessons, 11 a.m.; Beginner bridge, 10 a.m.; Potluck luncheon, 11:30-1 p.m.; Bridge, 12:00 p.m.; Joker, 12:30 p.m.; Hand & Foot, 1 p.m.; Mexican train, 5:45 p.m.; Line Dancing, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Ballroom dancing lessons, 7:30-8:30 p.m.
