Tigers are human after all

After they reeled off a dozen consecutive victories, including eight in District 15-3A competition, the Troup Tigers lost.

Sabine halted the win streak with a 52-30 win over Troup last week. The Tigers hosted West Rusk Tuesday, Feb. 6, and will host Arp on Senior Night for the final home game at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9. Troup, 26-3 for the season, will conclude the regular season at Winona Tuesday, Feb. 13. Tip-off is slated for 6:15 p.m.

Sabine 52, Troup 30

The Tigers were unable to find the net in their first, and hopefully last, off night of the district slate. From three-point range, Troup missed on all 17 attempts, while the Cardinals dropped in eight buckets from three-point land.

Sabine jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter but the Tigers were able to tie the Cardinals 9-9 in the second quarter to keep the score close. The Cardinals took a 22-15 advantage into the halftime break.

Troup needed to rally in the second half but the offense could not find the target. Sabine increased the lead to 36-23 by the end of the third quarter and used a 16-7 run in the fourth quarter to salt the game away. The Cardinals pulled out a 52-30 victory to improve to 20-6 for the season and to tie Troup at 8-1 for the District 15-3A lead.

For the Tigers, Jared Jackson scored 10 points, Shane Thomas added seven, Weslee Ross contributed five and Jones Ard and Kris Johnson scored four points apiece.

Trey Oliver led Sabine with 13 points, including one three-point bucket. Will Shawn dropped in a pair of three-pointers and finished with a dozen points, Eylan Goodwyn scored 11, T Taylor finished with eight (including two from three-point range), Scottie Taylor recorded five and Hunter Grotemat scored three points.

In the junior varsity game, Sabine edged Troup 45-35.
