The Troup Tigers claimed the State Class-3A golf championship after a second round of 306 at the Grey Rock Golf Course in Austin Tuesday, May 23.
After leading Class-3A in the first round with a 315, the Tigers were able to hold off a challenge from the defending champion Brock squad. Troup had a two-round total of 621, while Brock finished second at 636.
Jake Smelser carded a 75-74—149 to pace the Tigers. Jamey Scruggs, the only senior on the squad, fired an 80-75—155, Peyton Hugghins posted an 81-77—158, Brayden Maris carded a 79-85—164 and freshman Corbin Whitsell fired a 96-80—176. His second round total counted on the team’s overall final score.
Troup was in a position to capture the school’s first golf championship after the first round of the tournament.
After the first round, the Tigers were in first place with a team total of 315, 14 strokes ahead of defending champion Brock.
Smelser led the Tigers in the first round with a 75 on the par 72 course. He was sixth medalist behind Kasey Middleton of Comanche, who fired a 72.
Four of Troup’s golfers were among the top 28 in the tourney. Brayden Maris was 15th overall after he carded a 79, and Jamey Scruggs posted an 80 for 19th place. Peyton Hugghins fired an 81 and was 28th among the 75 golfers on the course. Corbin Whitsell carded a 96 for his first 18 holes.
Brock posted a team total of 329, followed by New Diana at 335. The second and final round was played Tuesday, May 23.
Troup was runner-up to Brock in the 2016 State tournament.
