BISD honors teachers, staff with annual awards ceremony

The family of teachers, staff members, and administrators at Bullard Independent School District gathered together to celebrate the successes of the district, as well as honor several of their own, at the Bullard ISD Celebration of Excellence Summer Sendoff luncheon event, held Friday, June 1, inside the Bullard First United Methodist Church Family Life Center.

“The Summer Sendoff luncheon is a special event each year because it gives us the opportunity to bring all of our staff members together and recognize the many wonderful employees in front of their peers, as well as their families and friends,” said Laura Jones, Bullard ISD Communications Specialist. “We are blessed at Bullard ISD to have an abundance of teachers and staff who go above and beyond every single day for the kids that are in this district. We also seize this opportunity to recognize our retirees who are leaving and the impact they’ve made through their roles at BISD over the years.”

Finalists named 2018 Bullard ISD Teachers of the Year include Bullard Early Childhood Pre-Kindergarten Marcy Compton, Bullard Primary School second grade teacher Angie McClure, Bullard Elementary School third grade teacher Teresa Green, Bullard Intermediate School fifth and sixth grade intervention teacher Melissa Wilson, Bullard Middle School career cruising teacher Nanci Dixon, and Bullard High School math teacher Jane Medley.

For the 2017-2018 school year at Bullard ISD, Schneider presented the Elementary Teacher of the Year award to McClure, as well as the Secondary Teacher of the Year award to Medley.

“Mrs. McClure and Mrs. Medley are two exceptional teachers in terms of their dedication to their craft of teaching to making sure their students have everything they possibly can and encourage a love of learning and reading,” said Jones. “It’s great for us as a district to acknowledge their hard work and efforts, as well as honor them in front of their peers, which we feel is very important.”

According to the nomination letter for McClure, her high standards and innovative thinking allows McClure to connect with her students.

“Angie McClure is a hidden hero,” said the letter. “She builds up her teammates and students. In her classroom, she holds high standards and is always there cheering on her students. She is resourceful and can come up with “out of the box” ways to connect with students who need that little extra help.”

Likewise, Medley’s nomination letter stated that she not only wants to see her students achieve success in the classroom, but also helps her fellow teachers by serving as the head of the BHS math department.

“Mrs. Medley is the teacher who always believes that every student has the potential to succeed,” said the letter. “Not only is she 100 percent devoted to her students, but [Medley] also offers outstanding support to all high school math teachers as the department head. Also, as the sponsor for BHS National Honor Society, she helps promote and recognize academic achievement among the students. She tirelessly works for the BHS campus, all the while keeping a bright cheerful attitude.”

The Bullard ISD Teachers and Employees of the Year awards are presented through a sponsorship by Cooperative Teacher’s Credit Union.

“This is the third year of the Teacher of the Year program for Bullard ISD,” said Schneider. “We are appreciative of CTCU for providing sponsorship allowing us to recognize just some of the superlative teachers on our campuses. We are blessed to have such an outstanding staff that masters the art of teaching on a daily basis.”

The Bullard Campus Teacher of the Year Program is the first step in the TASA Texas Teacher of the Year program with potential to extend to a national level. More information on the program can be found at

Additionally, Schneider and the district presented awards to the employees selected as Support Staff of the Year, now in its third year of existence, which includes employees with job titles such as teachers’ aides, janitors, maintenance workers, cafeteria workers, and custodians, among others.

“The Support Staff of the Year program is used to recognize the efforts of the support staff of Bullard ISD,” said Schneider. “The group consists of instructional aides, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, maintenance crew, nurses and secretarial support. So many of these employees play a significant role in providing students with opportunities and support throughout the year. We could not run the school district without them.”

Bullard ISD support staff members previously recognized and honored as 2018 Support Staff of the Year award winners include BES paraprofessional Tracy Schmidt, BPS paraprofessional Shan Leachman, BES cafeteria manager Misty Edwards, BIS paraprofessional Sallye Cowan, BMS custodian Amber Shepherd, BHS office receptionist Carmen Greene, and Bullard ISD central office/operations HR secretary Shera-Donne Lee.

At the end-of-the-year event, Schneider, along with Bullard ISD board member Jon Jacobs, awarded the 2018 Bullard ISD Support Staff of the year award to Greene.

In regards to Greene’s nomination, the letter included her willingness to create an atmosphere of positivity around the busy front office of BHS.

“Mrs. Greene always has a smile and caring heart,” said the letter. “She is characterized by her co-workers as being dependable and having determination. As the front office person for Bullard High School, each day she greets parents, students, and employees with support and a positive attitude. And, she does this as she is consistently keeps up with her job duties in the midst of what can be the very hectic demands of a school front office.”
