Bullard pounces, claims district win over Athens

Bullard Lady Panthers 3,

Athens Lady Hornets 2, FINAL

Resuming their district schedule last week, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity soccer team loaded the bus and traveled to face off against the Athens Lady Hornets Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Athens High School.

In the first half, the Lady Panthers were able to move the ball up and down the field with efficiency against the Lady Hornets, as Bullard kicked two goals into the Athens net.

Despite the strong offensive prowl by the visiting Bullard squad, the home team Athens was also able to capitalize on key opportunities in the first half of play, scoring twice before the halftime intermission, tying the contest, 2-2.

After making their way back onto the field of play for the second half, the Lady Panthers continued to fight against their strong district counterpart Lady Hornets, as Bullard scratched and clawed to put one goal past the Athens goalkeeper.

The Bullard defense proved to be strong, withstanding a strong attack by Athens in the second half, including a key save by junior goalkeeper Ashlyn Meador in the final minutes, allowing the Lady Panthers to claim the district victory against the Lady Hornets, 3-2.

Goals for Bullard in the district bout against Athens were attributed to Lindy Martin, with two goals, and Katelynn Henics, while assists were collected by Molly Martin and Kaitlyn Nash.

With the victory against the Athens Hornets, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity soccer team currently holds an overall record of 7-7-3, 2-2 in district play, on the 2018 season.

Next game: Monday, March 5 – Bullard at Palestine; Friday, March 9 – Chapel Hill at Bullard.
