Guard struggle in opening Wagstaff Tourney contest against Athens Hornets

The Brook Hill Guard varsity basketball team returned to action in the 2017-2018 regular season last week, as the team took part in the annual Wagstaff Tournament, held Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 28-30, at Tyler Junior College.

In the first round of the Wagstaff Tournament, the Brok Hill Guard varsity basketball team battled against the Athens Hornets.

Athens was able to take an early advantage in the first quarter of the contest against Brook Hill, as the Hornets scored a total of 13 points, while the Guard collected a total of six points of opening quarter offense.

In the second quarter, the Hornets continued to sting at the Guard with their powerful offensive play, with Athens outscoring Brook Hill, 21-15. At the halftime intermission, the teams headed for the locker room with Athens holding a 34-21 lead over Brook Hill.

After returning to the court for the second half of play, the Hornets and Guard battled hard against each other, using every weapon in their athletic arsenal in the third quarter of play. Athens was able to hold a slight edge, scoring a total of 18 points, while Brook Hill scored a total of 17 points.

In the fourth quarter, Brook Hill was unable to gain a scoring advantage to make up the scoring gap, as the Hornets outscored the Guard, 19-18, en route to Athens claiming the victory over Brook Hill, 71-56.

Leading the Guard in scoring was sophomore forward David Roberts, scoring a total of 17 points in the first round contest against the Hornets.

Other significant contributors for Brook Hill against Athens included junior guard Jared Johnson, with 11 points; senior guard Reid Hill, with nine points, including three three-pointers; junior forward Conner Livesay, with seven points; senior post Miguel Vega, with six points; senior forward Campbell Fletcher, with four points; and freshman forward TyJuan Cannon, with two points.

Currently, the Brook Hill Guard varsity basketball team stands with an overall record of 9-5 on the 2017-2018 regular season. The team was ranked at the eighth in the Private Large School 5A poll released by the Texas Association of Basketball coaches, released on Monday, Dec. 18.
