Lady Guard begin with 1-0 record with big win over REL Lady Raiders

The Brook Hill Lady Guard varsity softball team’s 2018 campaign began last week, as the team played the part of host for a home-opening contest against the Tyler Robert E. Lee Lady Raiders Monday, Feb. 12, at Brook Hill’s Schwab Field.

After one run plated by the visiting Lady Raiders in the top of the first inning, the home team Lady Guard strung together several solid at-bats, with three runs making their way across home in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second inning, Robert E. Lee scored once more, but was immediately answered by Brook Hill’s powerful bats, accounting for a total of four additional runs, as the Lady Guard led the Lady Raiders, 7-2.

Both Brook Hill and Robert E. Lee were evenly matched during the middle innings of the contest, adding one run to their total each in the third frame, as well as three runs each in the fourth inning, allowing the Lady Guard to hold an 11-6 advantage on the scoreboard against the Lady Raiders.

The Lady Guard marched further ahead of the Lady Raiders during the fifth inning of play, as a total of two Brook Hill runners found their way around the bases efficiently and across home plate.

Robert E. Lee attempted to make their way back into the contest, with one run in the top of the sixth inning, but the late comeback attempt fell short, as the Lady Guard defense stopped the Lady Raiders dead in their tracks in the top of the seventh inning, allowing Brook Hill to claim the win against Robert E. Lee, 13-7.

In the contest, the Lady Guard managed to collect a total of 12 hits, as well as four errors in the field, while the Lady Raiders collected a total of six hits.

Leading the victorious charge for the Lady Guard against the Lady Raiders was the bat of Kasey Anderson, going a perfect 4-4, including a triple, with a total of three runs batted in and one stolen base.

Other significant contributors for Brook Hill against Robert E. Lee included Micah Lovelady, going 2-3, including a double and a home run, with three RBIs and one stolen base; McKenna Lovelady, going 1-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases; Maddie Anthony, going 1-3 with one RBI and three stolen bases; Kaitlyn Juarez, going 2-4 with one RBI and two stolen bases; and Cassie Cannon, going 1-2 with one RBI and three stolen bases.

In the circle for Brook Hill, Anderson (1-0) was credited with the victory, allowing six hits, six runs, and four earned runs, while striking out seven and walking two, in four innings of play.

McKenna Lovelady was used as a relief pitcher by the Lady Guard coaching staff, allowing no hits and one run, while striking out four and walking one, in three innings of work.

With the victory against the Robert E. Lee Lady Raiders, the Brook Hill Lady Guard varsity softball team currently stands with an overall record of 1-0 to begin the 2018 season.
