Multiple fire departments respond to fire at self storage facility

The Smith County Fire Marshal’s Office remains on the scene Monday morning of a structure fire that damaged one business and completely destroyed another in the southwest part of the county.

Smith County Fire Marshal Connie McCoy-Wasson said her office was dispatched at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, November 5, to CubeSmart Self Storage, at 12324 Highway 155 South.

Residents who live on the property called in a fire that appeared to have started in the part of the storage business that houses RV’s and motor homes, Mrs. Wasson said.

The roof collapsed so they are not sure how many RVs were damaged or destroyed by the fire, she said, adding that they are in the preliminary stage of their investigation.

High winds spread the fire to the nearby business, Racer’s Choice Inc., at 12001 County Road 1114 in Tyler. The business, which manufactures products for car racing, is a complete loss, Mrs. Wasson said.

The fire is still active but is under control, McCoy-Wasson said. Fire Departments from Noonday, Flint/Gresham, Bullard, Tyler, Whitehouse, Dixie, Chapel Hill and Winona responded.

According to a press release from Smith County, the origin of the fire at the self storage facility has been narrowed down to two motor homes.

McCoy-Wasson said they have not pinpointed which one it started in and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. A cost estimate has not yet been determined.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting the Smith County Fire Marshal’s Office in the investigation.

Members of the Noonday Fire Department were still on hand at the scene at time of publication Monday because the fire was still burning.
