A total of six athletes involved with the Bullard Panther and Lady Panther varsity powerlifting teams will soon take on the best of the best across the state of Texas after having claimed the right to advance to the upcoming State powerlifting meets.
Bullard Lady Panthers:
After competing at the Region 3 Division 2 Regional Powerlifting Meet, held Saturday, March 3, at Fairfield High School, the Bullard Lady Panther varsity powerlifting team earned a sixth place team finish, as well as two placements for the State contest.
The Lady Panthers will be the first team to battle at the State Powerlifting Meet, scheduled for Saturday, March 17, at the Extraco Events Center in Waco.
Audree Shelton was the top finisher for the Lady Panthers at the Regional meet, claiming her ticket to the State meet by finishing second in the 148 pound weight class with a squat of 300 pounds, bench press of 170 pounds, and deadlift of 785 pounds, for a total weight lifted of 785 pounds.
As an alternate, Charity Campbell will also be making the trip to State for Bullard after a squat of 350 pounds, bench press of 145 pounds, and deadlift of 305 pounds, for a total amount of 800 pounds lifted, allowing her to finish third in the 165 pound weight class.
A week after their female counterparts, the Bullard Panther varsity powerlifting team will look to outlift the competition at the State Powerlifting Meet, to be held Saturday, March 24, at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
The Panthers finished as the second place team at the Region 3 Division 2 Powerlifting Meet, held Friday, March 2, at Malakoff High School.
Jansen Mattingly was able to secure his credentials for the State meet by finishing in first place in the 181 pound weight class at the Regional meet with a squat of 540 pounds, bench press of 300 pounds, and deadlift of 515 pounds, for a total weight lifted of 1,355 pounds.
Likewise, Damion Brown punched his ticket to the upcoming State event after a squat of 440 pounds, bench press of 275 pounds, and deadlift of 430 pounds, allowing him to claim the gold medal first place finish in the 148 pound weight class with a total weight lifted of 1,145 pounds.
Also qualifying for the State meet was Landon Warren in the 123 pound weight class, finishing the Regional meet with a squat of 350 pounds, bench press of 205 pounds, and deadlift of 345 pounds, for a total amount of 900 pounds lifted, resulting in a second place finish.
John Campbell will be the final Panther lifter to attend the State meet, as he claimed an alternate slot after finishing third in the Super Heavy Weight weight class at the Regional meet with a squat of 700 pounds, bench press of 380 pounds, and deadlift of 480 pounds, for a total weight lifted of 1,560 pounds.
