Bullard Panthers 2, Cumberland Academy Knights 5, FINAL
With the dawning of a new year came the beginning of a new sports program at Bullard High School, as the Bullard Panther varsity soccer team took to the field for the team’s first game in program history Thursday, Jan. 4, against the Cumberland Academy Knights at Bullard High School’s Panther Stadium.
In the first half of play, the Panthers were able to take an early 1-0 lead within the first five minutes of the contest. However, the offensive attack for the Knights proved to be strong, as Cumberland Academy kicked in three goals before the halftime break.
Not to be counted out, the Panthers came roaring back into contention in the second half of play, as the ball found its way pass the Knights goalkeeper and into the net for a score. Cumberland answered the second half goal of Bullard with two more goals in the second half, as the Knights defeated the Panthers, 5-2.
Kicking in goals for Bullard against Cumberland Academy were sophomore midfielder Arne Goetz in the first half, as well as senior midfielder and captain Will McCowin in the second half.
Assists for the Panthers against the Knights were picked up by junior midfielder Zach Vanwinkle and Goetz.
In the goal for Bullard, sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Carmichael collected a total of 12 saves on 17 shots on goal.
With the loss, the Bullard Panther varsity soccer team currently holds a 0-1 record on the 2018 season.
