Panthers observe annual bye week, to resume District 9-4A schedule Friday at Palestine


After observing the annual bye week in their schedule, the Bullard Panther varsity football team will return to the field to continue competing in Class 4A Division 1’s Region 3 District 9.

Currently, the Panthers hold a 1-4 overall record, 0-1 in district play. The Panthers’ lone victory so far this season came against the Commerce Tigers for Homecoming (44-24), while suffering losses against the Malakoff Tigers (48-34), Groesbeck Goats (24-21), Brownsboro Bears (49-35), and most recently against the Center Roughriders (39-35).

In the first five games of the 2017 season, the Panthers have been led at the quarterback position by senior quarterback Cleet Bowman, completing 58 percent of his passes, or 86 completions out of 147 attempts, for a total of 1,303 passing yards and 13 passing touchdowns.

Sophomore quarterback Tristen Shewmake also has seen action under center for the Panthers this season, completing five of 13 passing attempts for 56 passing yards and one passing touchdown.

The Panther receiving duo of senior wide receiver Ty Crayton and senior wide receiver Will McCowin have served as the leaders for the team, as Crayton has caught a total of 27 passes for 416 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns, while McCowin has caught 19 passes for 377 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.

Senior running back Luke Bowman has been relied on the most for the Panthers’ rushing game, running the ball on 78 attempts for 457 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns.

The Panthers will resume District 9-4A play Friday, Oct. 13, traveling to battle against the Palestine Wildcats in Palestine. Afterwards, the Panthers will return home for a district bout against the Chapel Hill Bulldogs Friday, Oct. 20, which will also serve as Youth Football Night.

The team will then load up the old school bus to travel for a district showdown against the Carthage Bulldogs Friday, Oct. 27 in Carthage, then come back to Panther Stadium for the annual Senior Night contest against the Henderson Lions Friday, Nov. 3.

The final game of the regular season for the Panthers will be held Friday, Nov. 10, as the team hits the road once again to face off against the Kilgore Bulldogs.
